Germany EU Blue Card – Opportunities for Qualified International Professionals
Germany continues to attract qualified professionals from around the world to address demand for skilled workers in key sectors of the German economy.
The EU Blue Card is a residence title for qualified international professionals who have an appropriate academic or comparable qualification and a qualified employment opportunity in Germany.
According to the official Make it in Germany information, applicants generally need a German academic qualification or a foreign qualification comparable to a German qualification. Under certain conditions, people with a tertiary-level qualification equivalent to at least Level 6 can also qualify.
Who Can Be Eligible?
The EU Blue Card may be relevant to qualified professionals working in areas such as:
- Information Technology and ICT
- Engineering
- Mathematics and Science
- Medicine
- Nursing and Midwifery
- Pharmacy
- Dentistry
- Veterinary medicine
- Architecture and spatial planning
- Transport planning
- ICT management
- Construction, manufacturing and distribution management
- Education and teaching
- Other recognised shortage occupations
The current German shortage-occupation list has been expanded and includes a number of professional fields in which Germany has a particular demand for qualified workers.
Recent University Graduates
Germany also provides a special opportunity for new entrants to the labour market.
Under the current rules, people who graduated from university within the previous three years may qualify for an EU Blue Card with the lower salary threshold, provided that the other requirements are fulfilled. This provision applies to both shortage and non-shortage occupations.
Therefore, recent graduates in fields such as IT, engineering, science, healthcare and other eligible professional areas may have opportunities to enter the German labour market.
Salary Requirements
For 2026, the standard minimum gross annual salary for an EU Blue Card is €50,700.
For shortage occupations and certain new entrants to the labour market, the lower threshold is €45,934.20 gross per year, subject to the applicable requirements and, where required, approval by the Federal Employment Agency.
Salary thresholds are updated annually by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. Therefore, applicants seeking to enter Germany in 2027 must check the official 2027 salary thresholds when they are published.
Age Requirement
There is no general EU Blue Card rule stating that all applicants must be under 45 years of age.
Therefore, a statement such as “only graduates under 45 can apply for the EU Blue Card” should not be presented as a general Blue Card requirement.
Age can become relevant under other German residence rules. For example, people over 45 applying for a qualified-worker work visa for the first time generally need to meet a higher salary requirement or demonstrate adequate pension provision. For 2026, the stated salary threshold is €55,770.
Important Requirements
A prospective EU Blue Card applicant generally needs:
1. A recognised or comparable academic qualification or eligible equivalent qualification.
2. A specific employment offer from an employer in Germany.
3. Employment lasting at least six months.
4. Employment that corresponds to the applicant's qualification.
5. The applicable minimum gross annual salary.
6. A professional licence where the occupation is regulated, such as certain healthcare professions.
7. Any required approval from the Federal Employment Agency.
Healthcare professionals, including nurses and medical professionals, may additionally need the relevant professional recognition and licence to practise in Germany.
2026–2027 Applicant Registration
Our registration/eligibility-assessment service is scheduled to open from 7 October 2026 for individuals interested in exploring Germany employment and EU Blue Card opportunities for 2027.
Applicants may submit their educational, professional and employment information for an initial eligibility assessment.
The assessment may cover:
- Academic qualifications
- Professional field
- Work experience
- German/European qualification comparability
- Potential shortage occupation category
- Potential salary eligibility
- German employment opportunities
- Relevant immigration pathway
Important: This registration is not an application to the German government and does not itself constitute an EU Blue Card application.
An EU Blue Card can only be granted when the applicant meets the applicable German legal requirements and obtains an appropriate qualifying employment offer. Registration with a private organisation, recruitment agency or consultancy does not guarantee employment, a visa, residence permit or EU Blue Card.
Who May Be Interested?
The programme may be particularly relevant to qualified professionals and graduates in:
IT | Software Development | Engineering | Healthcare | Nursing | Medicine | Science | Mathematics | Pharmacy | Dentistry | Architecture | Education | Accounting and Business-related professions
However, not every occupation automatically qualifies for an EU Blue Card. Eligibility depends on the applicant's qualification, occupation, job offer, salary and the applicable German immigration rules.
Why Consider Germany?
Germany has expanded several pathways for qualified international professionals. The Skilled Immigration Act has also widened access to the EU Blue Card, expanded the shortage-occupation list and introduced additional opportunities for recent graduates and certain IT specialists.
If you are a qualified professional considering Germany for your career, you can review your eligibility and prepare the required documents before beginning the formal immigration process.
Start your eligibility assessment from 7 October 2026 and explore your potential pathway to a career in Germany.
